Aspects of Core Energetics

BEING IN THE BODY

Being in the body is one of the most fundamental practices of the Core Energetics approach to therapy and personal spiritual growth. It facilitates a connection with our underlying feelings that may be present in us but which we are not clear about or consciously aware of. With time we learn to discern the undercurrents in our psyche by sensing them or their effect in our body.

Body in this context implies a lot more than just the physical anatomical structure, rather a whole energetic structure with sensations, feelings, impulses, mental imagery and consciousness. If these don't exactly reside in our body, they can be accessed through it. It is the vehicle which like the earth anchors and contains our entire reality even cosmic spiritual states of being.

The means by which we open up this treasure trove of our inner reality is two-fold; by melting into it and by opening it up. These can work together to potentate each other or separately at different times.

'Melting' is an internal, meditative-like approach where we sink into the terrain of our being inside. This can be simply sensing what is going on in our body at that moment, for example whilst verbally exploring a certain issue during a session. It can be slowly going deeper and deeper into what we are feeling, taking a while to reach there. This is especially useful when we want to touch into places in or close to our Core. Becoming sensitively attuned to our breathing, subtle sensations and feelings is an important part of exploring our true internal milieu.

'Opening the system', as this process is often referred to, is active and usually dynamic. Here we aim to connect to our feelings including our unconscious ones by freeing them from what is suppressing or masking them. Core Energetic, Bioenergetic and other emotionally energetic or psychodynamic exercises and postures are used. Role-play including psychodrama techniques are usually incorporated as are sometimes free movement, dance even martial arts moves. Qigong movements and stances are also commonly made use these being the oriental way of moving our energy and liberating stagnation. The overall aim with all these methods is to release and activate our feelings, to literally to put our emotions in motion! Consequently a psychological process can more easily and fluidly unfold as hidden material is accessed and stuck patterns shifted.
